First let's make sure we all know what we're talking about.
Duplicate bridge is a way of playing bridge where the luck of the cards is eliminated.
This is done by having multiple teams play the exact same hands against opponents who also play the same cards as the original opponents.
There are four elements of the duplicate game that make it different from regular bridge:
physical play of the cards, scoring, team movement, and role of the director.
Very briefly
- Physical play of the cards
The cards must be played in a manner that preserves the contents of each hand so that
other teams may play the exact same hands later.
- Scoring
Scoring of individual hands is done in a manner similar to that used when playing rubber bridge.
After all teams have played a specific hand their results are compared to see which teams did best for each hand.
These comparative scores must then be totaled for all hands to see which teams did the best overall.
- Team movement
Since many teams will play the same hands and will also play against different teams,
teams and boards must move to new tables during the course of a duplicate session.
- Role of the director
One person (who also may participate in the play) must serve as the director to insure that all
preparations are made prior to the session, to insure that teams and boards move to the
correct tables at the appropriate times,
and to resolve any issues that might arise during the session.
